The mechanics focus a lot more on characters and their interactions and abilities, than on painting the map with the colours of your empire, and one bad heir can cost your dynasty a lot of the prestige and lands their parents have fought hard to aquire or maintain, while one masterstroke of dynastic marriage could see your family inherit a realm larger than your own.
For those not familiar with the base game - Crusader Kings 2 is a dynastic grand strategy game where you pick one ruler and then play through with his heirs until the end of the game, where your score is determined based on the prestige of your dynasty.
